Where It All Started

Clos Clouds

It’s always great to get back to a familiar place, even after being gone for a while. I’ve been going to the local drag strip for as long as I can remember, way before I even got my drivers license. One of the first cars I owned was actually a Chevy Camaro- go figure that years later I’d still be visiting this place to shoot a Chevy Day

After years of shooting these cars, talking to the owners of some of the amazing machines they’ve built all for a single purpose – I forgot one important thing about the automotive and motorsports community. I’ve crossed the line and got myself involved in racing, messing around with cars a bit, and now here I am photographing and writing about all sorts of racing and all sorts of cars – but there was a point years ago I would just go out because I liked being around them. I don’t remember a lot of things from when I was a kid, but years before I picked up a camera or sat behind the wheel getting ready to line something up at the track- I do remember going for the fun of it. Back when I was still in Junior High my cousin Hector took my brothers and I to the Edinburg Race Track to check out some drag racing. We were all into cars but had never been to any kind of racing event, and there we were. It was insanely loud, it smelt funny, but I knew one thing for sure- I was hooked. Being out at the track yesterday reminded me that you don’t have to be behind the wheel or taking photos to appreciate what’s happening out there. I saw families walking around taking photos with these cars, people coming up to me just to talk about the car that had just made a pass and how fast it was – all these people were just spectators. They weren’t out there scoping the competition, they weren’t out there for any other reason then enjoying being around these people all doing something amazing. I forgot that it’s possible just to be out there because you love it, and yesterday was a reminder that you all are also the reason I haven’t given this up for the past seven years.
